Tram, Subway, Train…oh my!

In my humble opinion, the transportation system in Rome is top notch. The best cities to travel in are the ones that have excellent public transportation. It can make getting around a snap, and it can also be fun.

Using public transport can also give you a chance to take a short break — sitting down (when you can find a seat) can often bring a short respite from your touristy activities. It’s also fairly inexpensive.

If you are looking for some decent maps of Rome’s public transport, check out this site. When you click on the site, look to the right-hand side of the screen. You will see a list of pdf files under the title Le mappe del trasporto (transport maps).

Unfortunately, this site is only in Italian.

ATAC is the organization in Rome that is responsible for making public transportation work in Rome. If you can read some Italian, then their site is worth a read since it is full of interesting information and maps. When you click on the link above, you will notice a list of pdf files that can be downloaded. Remember that pdf files can be downloaded and saved to your computer or a mobile device. If you have a portable device that you can bring with you on your travels, it might not be so bad to have a decent map that won’t get lost.

The ones that might be of the most use are below. To download them, you’ll have to visit the ATAC site directly:

  • Roma centro
This is an excellent map of the center of Rome. Might be hard to print out, but you could always print out relevant sections.

  • Roma città
This is a map of the city of Rome. It’s quite a large file and might not be the most useful, but it is worth a look and you might be able to print out applicable sections.

  • Metro e ferrovie regionali
This is a map of the metro and the regional train lines. Very useful when you want to know how to get from point A to point B. This map prints out pretty well. It’s usually available in most guidebooks too.

  • Piste ciclabili di Roma ed di Ostia
This is a map of the bike trails and roads in Rome and in Ostia. If you plan to do some biking, this is a great map for you.

  • Linee tranviarie
This map shows the tram network of Rome. It’s a small map and is worth carrying with you.

Remember that the tickets for the metro (subway), tram and bus are usually interchangeable. So if you buy a metro ticket, remember that as long as it is still valid, you can use it on the tram and bus.
